PHILADELPHIA--The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team was defeated, 9-8, to cross-town rival Temple at Geasey Field on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks were unable to hold a 5-2 halftime lead, as the Owls scored a goal with four second remaining in the game for the win. Kelly Huether led the Hawks with two goals and an assist.
Saint Joseph's (4-3, 0-1 Atlantic 10) stormed out of the gates with four straight goals by Huether, Jessica Westlake and Jenna Martino. The Hawks held a 5-2 advantage in the half after Christina Colangelo added a goal with six minutes remaining in the stanza.
After a goal by Abby Renninger opened a 6-2 lead to start the second half, Temple (4-3, 1-0 A-10) ran off six straight goals to take an 8-6 lead with 15:56 to play.
The Hawks didn't give in, answering back with two goals by Martino and Renninger, that left the game tied 8-8 with 11 minutes remaining. Temple maintained possession for much of the half, holding on for the second shot and capitalizing on their possession, scoring with four second remaining to give the Owls the 9-8 edge.
Temple out-shot SJU 21-16 for the game, 11-6 in the second half, while Saint Joseph's controlled 12 of the 18 draws for the game.
The Hawks will be in action on Saturday as they travel to Virginia to take on the George Mason Patriots. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
