NORFOLK, Va. -- Late heroics by Old Dominion's Satatu Dodo lead the Monarchs over Saint Joseph's (2-2), 12-11, this afternoon in Norfolk, Virginia. Senior tri-captain Christina Colangelo tallied four goals and classmate Lindsey-Kate McCool netted three for the Hawks.
In a back and forth game, which saw SJU rally from two goals down on four different occasions, Dodo broke the Hawks' heart with 17 seconds remaining to give Old Dominion the victory (2-0).
Saint Joseph's was down 10-8 with 12:06 remaining, when the Hawks began its final comeback. Back-to-back goals by Colangelo and McCool 90 seconds apart knotted the game at 10 with nine minutes remaining.
The Hawks couldn't muster another goal to get the lead, as the Monarchs' Katherine Bruno scored with five and a half minutes to go for the 11-10 lead. Senior midfielder Abby Renninger answered 50 seconds later, tying the game for the seventh time at 11 with 4:43 remaining. Nevertheless, the Hawks couldn't fend off ODU, as Dodo's last minute shot settled the game.
For the game, SJU held the offensive play, outshooting the Monarchs 27-20 overall, and 14-9 in the second half alone. ODU out-hustled Saint Joseph's, picking up 20 ground balls to the Hawks' 15.
Old Dominion opened the game with leads of 2-0, 3-1, and 4-2, all in the first 15 minutes of the first half. The Hawks ran off three straight goals by McCool, Courtney McManama, and Colangelo to capture SJU's first lead of the game.
After ODU ended the half by regaining the lead for a 6-5 margin, the Hawks started the second half strong with a pair of tallies by Colangelo and McCool for SJU's second and last lead at 7-6.
Sara Larson made eight stops for the Monarchs, while Suzy Herlihy had six saves in the cage for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's will hit the turf on Friday taking on rival Villanova for a Noon face-off at Finnesey Field.
