Testa Fuels Field Hockey to 3-1 Win at West Chester

Oct. 25, 2009

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Saint Joseph's sophomore Theresa Testa scored for the second straight game and added an assist as the SJU field hockey team bounced back with a 3-1 win over West Chester on Sunday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field. The win sets up a top-of-the-table clash with Richmond on Friday at Buckley Field.

Testa started the scoring off on Sunday with a goal on a penalty corner just under 10 minutes into the game. She took a feed from senior Anne Schreuders and sent it home for a 1-0 lead.

Midway through the frame it was Testa playing the role of giver as her pass set up junior Hannah Rogers for a goal to double the Hawk advantage. Senior Kellie Walter added an unassisted goal with 8:46 remaining in the half to give SJU what turned into an insurmountable lead.

Five minutes before halftime, Alyssa Gallen scored for West Chester (8-9, 3-2 Atlantic 10) to cut the deficit to two, but the teams would go scoreless in the second half, securing the win for Saint Joseph's.

Junior Kelly Swanick made three saves in the win, while WCU's Joelle Zarefoss made four.

Saint Joseph's (6-8, 3-1 Atlantic 10) sits in second place in the conference, one game behind idle Richmond. A win on Friday would put the Hawks in the driver's seat for the top seed in the conference tournament, but a Richmond victory would seal the regular season title for the Spiders. The crucial matchup is slated for 1:00 p.m. Friday at Buckley Field.

Before that, however, Saint Joseph's will close out its non-conference schedule with a Tuesday night clash at Villanova. The game will start at 7:00 p.m.
