Women's Tennis Drops Hard-Fought Match to Delaware State, 4-3

Oct. 8, 2009

PHILADELPHIA - Putting forth a gritty, hard-fought effort, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team came down to the wire in its match versus Delaware State on Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they couldn't earn the final point, falling 4-3 to the Hornets at the SJU Tennis Complex.

Delaware State earned the first point of the match in doubles play. The Hawks got an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles by senior Jhennifer Kedzierski and sophomore Laura Matz. It wasn't enough though as the Hornets posted 8-5 and 8-2 wins at No.2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, to earn the point.

Earning the start at No. 1 singles, freshman Casey Robinson posted a stellar 6-4, 6-0 win over the Hornets' M. Sisic. Kedzierski followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, while sophomore Sally Kalani Stainier was a winner at No. 6 singles to give SJU three points.

With wins by Delaware State at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, the Hornets pulled out the team victory with a third-set tie-breaking win by Anna Kovtun over Matz, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.

Despite a solid performance, the Hawks fall to 1-3 on the year, while Delaware State improves to 2-0.

Saint Joseph's hosts Manhattan on Monday at 3 p.m.
