RIVERSIDE, Calif. -
The Saint Joseph's softball team splits its doubleheader at University of California-Riverside Wednesday evening. The Hawks dropped the opener 7-1, but earned a 5-4 victory in eight innings in game two.
In game two, the Highlanders jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first, only to have the Hawks come back with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 advantage.
University of California-Riverside tied the game at 3 all with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.
The game remained tied, forcing extra inning. In the top of the eighth, with the bases loaded, senior outfielder Erika Rosenwinkel smacked a two-run single to put the Hawks up 5-3.
The Highlanders cut SJU's lead to one in the bottom of the eighth, but senior pitcher Dani Gonzales came on for the save, as SJU sophomore Lauren Pembleton earned the victory.
In the opener, the Hawks scored the first run of the game in the second inning, but surrendered seven straight to the Highlanders, falling 7-1.
Saint Joseph's (5-10) caps its play in California tomorrow with a game versus Quinnipiac.
