TUCSON, Ariz. -
Despite getting home runs from senior outfielder Erika Rosenwinkel and freshman third baseman Monica Aguilar, the Saint Joseph's softball team dropped its doubleheader st No. 13-ranked Arizona Sunday. The Hawks fell 14-5 in the opener and 20-1 in the nightcap of the Hillenbrand Invitational.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Saint Joseph's cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the third. Rosenwinkel's RBI-single scored Aguilar, while sophomore Dana Bieniek made it a two-run game with a RBI single.
Unfortunately for SJU, Arizona's bats came alive for 10 runs in the bottom of the third to give the Wildcats a 14-2 edge.
The Hawks rallied for three runs in the fourth. Freshman Bernadette Moran drove in SJU's third run, scoring sophomore Laura Cardone from third. Aguilar then followed with a two-run shot toe left field to cut the deficit to 14-5.
SJU's offense couldn't cut into the deficit anymore though as Arizona held on for the win.
In game two, Arizona again jumped out to a 4-0 edge, but the Hawks cut the deficit in the bottom of the second as Rosenwinkel drilled a solo shot for SJU.
The Wildcats' offense once again blew the game open, this time scoring three runs in the third, eight in the fourth and five in the fifth to earn a 20-1 win over the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's (4-9) returns to action this Tuesday versus Quinnipiac in Walnut, California.
