WASHINGTON, D.C. -
The Saint Joseph's softball team bounced back from its losses at Fordham Saturday with a pair of wins at George Washington on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks topped the Colonials 10-1 in five innings in game one and 1-0 in the nightcap to improve to 15-13 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic 10.
In the opener, Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 edge in the top of the second on a two-run double off the bat of senior Sue Lebow.
The Hawks added to their lead with three runs in the third and a run in the fourth. Junior Brooke Darreff drilled a RBI-double to plate the first run of the third inning and came around to score on a two-run home run from senior outfielder Erika Rosenwinkel. Sophomore Laura Cardone's infield single in the fourth scored freshman Bernadette Moran to give SJU a 6-0 edge.
On the mound, senior pitcher Dani Gonzales was stellar, allowing just four hits over the opening four innings.
The Hawks ended the game with four runs in the fifth. Gonzales got the first run across in the inning with a fielder's choice, while classmate Beka Shumock's three-run triple upped the Hawks' output to 10 runs.
The Colonials would tally one run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Hawks held on for a 10-1 decision.
In the nightcap, Darreff's RBI-double in the top of the first proved to be all the offense SJU would need as Gonzales and George Washington's Heidi Penna battled in a pitchers' duel.
Gonzales allowed just three Colonials to reach base (one hit and two walks), while Penna gave up just three hits after the first.
However, it was Darreff's blow that counted as SJU held on for the 1-0 victory.
