BRONX, N.Y.--The SJU softball squad came away with a 10-8 victory over St. Bonaventure to advance to Day Two of the Atlantic 10 Championship at Bahoshy Field. Dana Beiniek led the Hawks with a 2-for-2 hitting day, scoring three runs and batting in four.
Saint Joseph's (24-19) jumped all over the Bonnies early running out to an early 6-0 lead after two innings. Brooke Darreff's first-inning single brought home Monica Aguilar and Bieniek for a 2-0 lead after one.
In the second, Bieniek singled home Beka Shumock on a 1-2 pitch for a 3-0 edge. Aguilar came up with a ground rule double scoring Bernadette Moran. After a Darreff strike out Erika Rosenwinkel singled to score Aguilar and Bieniek and give Saint Joseph's a 6-0 lead.
St. Bonaventure (22-32) struck back with three of their own in the top half of the third, but SJU came right back with three more to make it 9-3 after three. The three runs came thanks to a Bieniek double scoring Moran and Sarah Falk. A tricky stolen base play saw Aguilar get caught in a run down only to have Bieniek sprint home and score, while Aguilar ultimately took second base.
SJU had a chance to close out the Bonnies in the fifth when the Hawks scored on a Bieniek sacrifice fly that scored Shumock. Moran was thrown out at second with Aguilar in the on deck center.
The Bonnies then staged their own comeback scoring three in the sixth to make it 10-6.
Three Hawks pitchers combined to finish off St. Bonaventure with Dani Gonzales (13-12) didn't earn the win in her second start of the day as she didn't pitch enough innings. She pitched three innings giving up four hits, three earned runs, one walk and three strike outs.
Erin Gallagher got the win as she relieved Gonzales for two and a third innings allowing five hits, three runs, a walk and a strike out. She was replaced by Lauren Pempleton who got the save in her one and two-thirds innings. Pembleton allowed two hits and one earned runs.
Saint Joseph's will face the lowest-seeded loser from tomorrow's semifinals between UMass/Fordham and Saint Louis/Charlotte. Game time is tentatively set for 5:00 p.m.
