Field Hockey Falls to Penn, 2-1

Sept. 9, 2009

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's field hockey fell to city rival Penn by a 2-1 score on Wednesday afternoon at Buckley Field. A pair of first half goals by Penn's Annie Matthews gave the Quakers all the offense they would need. SJU senior Anne Schreuders opened her account for the season with a goal early in the second half.

Penn (1-2) took the lead midway through the opening period as Matthews took a feed from Katie Rose and deposited it into the Hawk cage. The Quakers struck again just under six minutes later when Matthews took the ball and maneuvered around SJU keeper Kelly Swanick to double the Penn lead.

Saint Joseph's (0-3) came out strong in the second half and cut the deficit to one with 27:58 to play. Schreuders picked up the ball 25 yards out and broke in on the cage before slipping a shot around Quaker goalkeeper Kieran Sweeney.

The Hawks had the majority of the shots in the second half, but Sweeney made five of her six saves in the final 35 minutes to preserve the victory. She totaled six stops for the game, while Swanick tallied three for Saint Joseph's, including a point-blank attempt from Kirstin Snyder with just over nine minutes remaining to keep the Hawks within a goal.

SJU returns to Buckley Field for a 2:00 p.m. matchup with Delaware on Saturday, September 12. The Hawks will face Drexel at 2:00 p.m. the following day to end their season-opening homestand.
