The Saint Joseph's softball team fell to the host North Carolina Tar Heels, 8-0, in the title game of the Carolina Classic on Sunday. The Hawks finished with a 2-2 record in their season-opening tournament, posting wins against Delaware and UNC-Greensboro, but falling twice the the 23rd-ranked Tar Heels.
Two days after holding their own in a 6-3 loss to North Carolina, the Hawks offense was held in check by Tar Heel starter Danielle Spaulding. Saint Joseph's sophomore Monica Aguilar's walk in the first was the only blemish in Spaulding's no-hitter on Sunday.
In the field, two errors led to a run in the second and three runs in the third against SJU starter Erin Gallagher. The sophomore struck out two, but was charged with four unearned runs in two and a third innings of work.
North Carolina (6-3) added a fifth run in the fifth inning and a three-run home run by Spaulding ended the game in the sixth.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at Longwood.
