March 17, 2010

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's sophomore Erin Gallagher threw a no-hitter as the Hawks defeated Penn, 1-0, in the first game of a doubleheader at Warren Field. It was first no-hitter of her career, and the eighth in Saint Joseph's history.

The sophomore from Abington, Pa., struck out seven batters and walked just four as the Hawks upped their record to 9-6.

The Quakers came back to win the nightcap, 7-1, to improve to 3-6 on the season.

The Hawks got the only run they needed in the third when Laura Cardone doubled and advanced to third on a ground out by Bernadette Moran. Monica Augilar walked and then advanced to second on an illegal pitch. Cardone, who finished the game going 2-for-4, then scored on the second consecutive illegal pitch by Cailyn Hennessy.

Penn came back in the second game, scoring in the first inning on an RBI double by Alisha Prystowsky. The Quakers went up 3-0 in the fourth, before SJU scored its only run in the fifth, as Cardone hit an RBI single to score Taylor Korpita.

Penn added one more in the bottom of the fifth and scored three in the sixth, led by a two-run homer from Jessica Arneson.

Taryn Ashway was saddled with the second-game loss for SJU, but had four strikeouts. Chelsea Ott earned the win for Penn, allowing seven SJU hits and striking out two.

The Hawks (9-7) return to action on Friday at the UMBC Spring Classic.
