BALTIMORE, Md. -
The Saint Joseph's softball team capped play at the UMBC Spring Classic with an extra-inning 3-2 win over Georgetown and a 3-2 win over the host Retrievers. The Hawks finished the weekend with a 3-1 mark, good for second place in the round robin tournament.
Against Georgetown in Sunday's first game, the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the top of the fourth. Junior Taylor Korpita smacked her second home run of the season as she took Georgetown's Mackensey Carter deep over the wall in right center.
The Hoyas answered back in the bottom of the fifth as they scored a run off the Hawks' starter, Erin Gallagher. With a runner on third with two outs, Cara Savarese singled to left field, scoring Kelly Cianciotta to tie the game at one.
The teams remained deadlock after seven innings, and neither team was able to plate a run in the first extra frame.
In the ninth inning though, Saint Joseph's struck for a pair of runs to gain a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore Alaina Loguidice scored on a throwing error off a hit by classmate Monica Aguilar. With a runner at second and third, senior Brooke Darreff gave SJU a two-run lead on a RBI single to left field.
Up by two, Saint Joseph's reliever Taryn Ashway looked to complete her third-straight scoreless inning of work. Despite giving up a sacrifice run with one out, Ashway closed out the ninth with a strike out to earn the victory.
In the nightcap, the Hawks faced the host Retrievers for the second time in three days. And once again it was Saint Joseph's coming out on the winning side.
Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Loguidice and junior Laura Cardone collected a RBI single and double, respectively. Freshmen Rochelle Christman and Deanna Stinner scored the runs for SJU.
Aguilar extended SJU's lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth on a solo homer to left field.
Gallagher was solid for SJU, allowing just two hits, while striking out seven before giving away to Ashway for the final two innings.
UMBC was able to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Ashway induced a ground out to second base to end the game and help the Hawks improve to 12-8 on the year.
The Hawks return to action at Rider on Thursday. SJU will be the designated home team despite player at the Broncs' field.
