Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Behind stellar pitching, the Saint Joseph's softball team blanked Rider, 2-0, Thursday afternoon. Sophomore pitcher Erin Gallagher allowed just four hits over five innings, while striking out six to earn the win.

The Hawks scored both of their runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of errant Rider pitching. Saint Joseph's freshman Dana Parks was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an infield single by junior Laura Cardone. Sophomore Monica Aguilar followed with a walk, brining junior Taylor Korpita to the plate with the sacks filled. The Hawk outfielder delivered, drawing the second walk in a row from the Broncs' Rachael Matreale, plating Parks to give SJU a 1-0 lead.

Cardone upped the lead to 2-0 in the next at-bat as Matreale uncorked a wild pitch, allowing the speedy outfielder to score easily.

Saint Joseph's reliever Taryn Ashway kept the Broncs off the board in the final two innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out a pair to earn the save.

At the plate, Cardone went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Hawks, with Korpita collecting the lone RBI.

Saint Joseph's opens Atlantic 10 play this Sunday against Saint Louis. The doubleheader against the Billikens is set to begin at noon at Temple's Ambler Campus.
