PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team dropped its conference opener, 13-10, to Duquesne on Friday evening at Finnesey Field. Grace Dinn tallied five points with four goals and an assist.
The Dukes struck first with a goal two minutes into the match while the Hawks came firing back with three straight to take the lead before Duquesne would retaliate with three goals of their own to regain the lead at 4-3.
Saint Joseph's Julie Mineweaser set Francesca Volpe up for a goal at the 10:03 mark and scored her first goal of the game to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead at the half.
Duquense tied the game again just 39 seconds into the second half before Dinn drove a ball into the net one minute later and Jenna Martino converted a free-position shot to give the Hawks the lead once again at 7-5.
SJU's lead was short-lived as Duquesne's Katie Rekart sparked a 7-0 run for the Dukes with two back to back goals and scored the seventh in the run with 13:33 to play.
Mineweaser got the Hawks back on the board at 12:46 and Dinn added another 32 seconds later but the Dukes struck again with 10:10 to go. Mineweaser scored her third goal of the game with 5:13 left but the Hawks couldn't gather anymore offense for a 13-10 final.
SJU hosts St. Bonaventure on Sunday at Finnesey Field. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
