The Saint Joseph's softball team took game one of its doubleheader against St. Bonaventure, 3-1, but fell 4-2 in the second contests Saturday afternoon at Temple University's Ambler Field.
The Bonnies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game one as Shelly Seger scored from second on a RBI single by Steph Narde down the right field line.
The Hawks took advantage of a St. Bonaventure error to plate two in the bottom of the third. With runners at second and third, SJU senior Brooke Darreff fouled off a ball to third base, only to have the ball hit the SBU defender and hit the ground.
Darreff took advantage, drilling a two-run single to center field, scoring Dana Parks and Laura Cardone to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
Saint Joseph's (14-11, 1-3 Atlantic 10) added its third run in the bottom of the fifth as Darreff drew a bases-loaded walk against St. Bonaventure starter Sherri Thompson. Sophomore Alaina Loguidice scored from third to up the Hawks' lead to 3-1.
Sophomore pitcher Erin Gallagher kept the Bonnies off the board for the final six innings, posting the complete-game win to improve to 11-6 on the year. Gallagher scattered five hits, while striking out 10 in the victory.
In game two, the Bonnies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. With runners at first and second, Danielle Frye drilled a three-run pinch-hit home run over the right field wall off Saint Joseph's starter Taryn Ashway to give her team the lead.
Kara Morenus extended St. Bonaventure's lead to 4-0 as she led off the top of the fourth with a solo homer to left field.
Loguidice got the Hawks on the board in the bottom of the fourth, singling home classmate Bernadette Moran from second.
Darreff collected her fourth RBI on the day in the bottom of the fifth as her double scored sophomore Monica Aguilar to make it a 4-2 game.
However the Hawks would score no more, stranding a runner in both the sixth and seventh.
Saint Joseph's returns to action at Villanova on Tuesday.
