VILLANOVA, Pa. -
The first collegiate home run from shortstop Rochelle Christman proved the decisive blow in Saint Joseph's 2-1 win over Villanova in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader. The Wildcats rallied though for a 2-1 win in game two to split the series with the Hawks.
In the top of the fourth of game one, Christman drilled a two-run shot over the centerfield wall, plating sophomore Bernadette Moran as well to give SJU a 2-0 edge.
On the mound, sophomore Erin Gallagher was stellar over the first six innings, allowing just one hit. However, Villanova's molly Manning made it a 2-1 game with a one-out RBI single.
Gallagher shut the door on the Wildcats though, sending the next two batters down in order to improve to 12-6 on the year.
In game two, the Hawks struck first again, taking advantage of a first inning error. Junior Laura Cardone tripled to right field and came around to score on the same play on a fielding error by the Wildcats' catcher.
Villanova answered back though in the top of the second on a two-out two-RBI single by Tessa Braga off SJU starter Taryn Ashway.
Ashway and Gallagher combined to keep the Wildcats off the board over the remaining five innings, but the Hawks couldn't plate another run as they moved their record to 15-12 on the season with the split.
The Hawks begin a two-game set at Dayton this Friday and Saturday. Game one is set for 3 p.m. on Friday.
