March 16, 2011

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Rochelle Christman collected a career-high seven RBI as the Saint Joseph's softball team slugged its way to a two-game sweep of Penn Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks took the opener against the Quakers, 5-2, and driller Penn, 13-4 in five innings in the nightcap.

In the opener, Saint Joseph's took a 1-0 edge in the top of the second as junior Alaina Loguidice drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Christman from from third.

Penn tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Hawks tacked on three runs in the third to open a 4-1 lead. Christman did all the damage, slamming a three-run homer over the left field wall, plating junior Monica Aguilar and sophomore Shannon Kramer.

A RBI single by senior Laura Cardone scored Loguidice in the fourth to open up a 5-1 advantage for Saint Joseph's.

Penn would tack on a run in the fifth, but SJU junior Erin Gallagher shut down any further Penn threat. Gallagher picked up the complete-game win after allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out six.

In the nightcap, the Hawks scored 13 runs on 15 hits as they jumped all over Penn's pitching early.

Sophomore Dana Parks scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Aguilar to get the offense going in first, while a Christman double scored Aguilar and Kramer to put SJU up 3-0.

Parks' RBI single in the top of the second scored sophomore Deanna Stinner to put the Hawks up 4-0, with a two-run third upping the lead to 6-0. Kramer and freshman Morgan Earling picked up the RBI, while junior Bernadette Moran and Kramer came in to score.

The Quakers got to SJU starter Taryn Ashway for a run in the bottom of the third, but the Hawks answered back with four runs in the top of the fourth. Parks and Kramer each added another RBI, while Christman hit her second homer of the day, a two-run shot that upped the lead to 10-1.

Penn scored two runs in the fourth to make it a 10-3 contest, but again the Hawks' offense went wild, scoring three runs in the fifth. Aguilar did it all with one swing, smacking a three-run homer to left field.

Ashway struck out six over four innings of work to pick up the win.

The Hawks open Atlantic 10 play this Friday versus Dayton at 3 p.m. at Villanova.
