WASHINGTON, D.C. -
The Saint Joseph's softball team dismantled George Washington Friday afternoon, holding the Colonials to one hits, while collecting 11 in a 10-0 victory in five innings. Hawks' junior Monica Aguilar drove in four with a grandslam, while Erin Gallagher allowed just one hit in four innings to earn the victory in the circle.
The Hawks (21-11, 5-2 Atlantic 10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of a pair of GW errors. With runners at the corner and two outs, Aguilar stole second, drawing an errant throw that allowed junior Bernadette Moran to score from third. A fielding error on a hot shot by sophomore Shannon Kramer allowed Aguilar to score from second to give the Hawks a two-run lead.
George Washington (11-12-1, 3-1 Atlantic 10) would get a one-out single in the bottom of the second, but Gallagher would hold the Colonials offense dormant from there.
Back at the plate, Saint Joseph's struck for three runs in the second to open a 5-0 edge. Sophomore Dana Parks, senior Laura Cardone and junior Bernadette Moran all picked up RBI singles, with Parks, Cardone and senior Dana Bieniek all scoring in the inning.
Saint Joseph's put the mercy-rule into effect in the fourth, scoring five runs with Aguilar delivering the major blow in the grand slam. Alaina Loguidice scored the sixth run for SJU on a RBI single by Moran, with Aguilar following with a bomb over the left center wall, scoring as Parks, Cardone and Moran scored along with Aguilar to give the Hawks' a 10-0 lead.
Gallagher, who struck out six and allowed just one hit and a walk in four innings, gave way to sophomore Taryn Ashway in the fifth. Ashway made quick work of George Washington,as she worked around a one-out walk to strike out the next two batters to preserve the win.
Individually, Aguilar went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Moran went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Parks was the third Hawk to collect multiple hits, going 2-for-3, scoring a pair of runs along with Cardone.
The Hawks cap the two-game series against GW on Saturday at noon.
