WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Saint Joseph's junior Erin Gallagher threw her second career no hitter, and the ninth in team history, as the Hawks' softball team topped George Washington, 1-0, Saturday afternoon.
Gallagher was brilliant in the circle, allowing just two walks, while striking out nine for her team-leading 17th win of the year. She previously pitched a no hitter last season against Penn in a 1-0 victory.
The Hawks, whose only hit came from junior Bernadette Moran in the first inning, tallied the game's lone run in the fifth inning on an errant throw. With freshman Maria Ficca at second, junior Alaina Loguidice drilled a grounder to shortstop. On the throw, the ball sailed passed the GW first baseman, with the relay to second not in time. On the throw to second though, Ficca made a dash for home, drawing an errant throw over the head of the Colonials' catcher allowing Ficca to score safely.
Gallagher made short work of GW from there, retiring the final nine batters in order to preserve her second no hitter.
The Hawks return to action Sunday at Fordham. Game one of the doubleheader begins at noon.
