The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team fell to 14th ranked Massachusetts, 16-9, in it's first home conference match of the season on Saturday afternoon at Finnesey Field. Junior Matt Dougherty led the Hawks' scoring with three goals while sophomore Kyle Williams tallied two goals and four assists.
Massachusetts jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter with three goals from Art Kell and two from Will Manny. Dougherty scored the Hawks first goal with 3:00 left in the period to make it 5-1.
Manny scored again to start the second quarter before Williams sent a pass into Steve Dunn for a goal at the 12:37 mark. The Minutemen responded with two goals before Dougherty scored with 16 seconds to go for an 8-3 halftime score.
Williams tallied the first goal at 9:09 in the third quarter before Massachusetts went on a 5-0 run to go up by nine, 13-4.
The Hawks outscored the Minutemen, 5-3, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the early deficit.
Griffin Ferrigan made eight saves in goal for the Hawks.
Manny and Kell led Massachusetts with four goals and an assist apiece, while goalkeeper Tim McCormack tallied 10 saves in net.
Saint Joseph's continues its four-game homestand, taking on Hofstra on Saturday, April 9. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Finnesey Field.
