Softball Splits Pitching Duels With Fordham

April 3, 2011

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - The Saint Joseph's softball team split its doubleheader with Fordham on Sunday as both squads had their pitching shine. The Hawks earned a 1-0 win in the opener on a one-hit shutout by junior pitcher Erin Gallagher, but fell in game two, 1-0.

In game one, Fordham had the first scoring chance, but Gallagher worked out of a jam. With runners at the corners and two outs in the bottom of the third, Gallagher induced a ground out to second base to end the threat.

The score remained 0-0 heading into the top of the sixth, but the Hawks would finally break through. With two outs, sophomore Dana Parks singled and stole second to get into scoring position. Junior Bernadette Moran followed with a grounder to shortstop, but beat the throw to first, while Parks came around to score the game's lone run.

Gallagher preserved the win, retiring the final six Fordham batters in order to earn the complete-game shutout.

In the second game, sophomore Taryn Ashway held Fordham batters off edge over the opening four innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out four.

Unfortunately for SJU, a two-out infield single against Gallagher in the bottom of the sixth was the decisive blow.

The split moved SJU's record to 23-12 on the year and 7-3 in the Atlantic 10. Fordham moved to 22-15 and 5-3 in the conference.

The Hawks return to action this Wednesday at Delaware. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
