Box Score

NEWARK, Del. - The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped a hard-fought, extra-inning contest at Delaware on Wednesday. The Hawks fell to the Blue Hens, 5-4, in eight innings in the non-conference contest.

The Hawks (23-13) jumped out to a 2-0 in the top of the second as a two-out double by Morgan Earling scored Rochelle Christman to put SJU up one. A fielding error and follow-up rundown by Alaina Loguidice, allowed Earling to plate the second run.

Delaware (11-24) took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third as the Blue Hens touched up SJU starter Erin Gallagher for a pair of earned runs and scored once on an error.

Earling struck again for SJU, this time delivering a solo homer in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 3-3.

Unfortunately for SJU, Delaware answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 advantage.

Sophomore Shannon Kramer tied the game for the Hawks in the top of the sixth though with a RBI single that scored junior Monica Aguilar.

Gallagher held the Blue Hens off the board over the next two innings, forcing extra frames.

After SJU stranded a runner in the top of the eighth, the Hawks' reliever Taryn Ashway got within an out of forcing a ninth inning. However a fielding error allowed the Blue Hens to score the winning run.

The Hawks return to action Friday when they host Charlotte. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at La Salle's softball field.
