Backed by goals from sophomore Mo Hawkins and senior Jen Pfeiffer, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team downed UMBC, 2-1, Wednesday evening at Retriever Soccer Park.
After a scoreless first half, the Hawks (2-3-2) broke open the game early in the second half with a pair of goals a little more than five minutes apart. Hawkins tallied her second goal of the season as she beat a UMBC defender and lifted a shot just under the left edge of crossbar to put SJU up 1-0 at 58:03.
Pfeiffer added the eventual game winner at 63:05 as she collected the rebound off a save by UMBC's goalkeeper and deposited it into the open net to make it 2-0.
The Retrievers (0-7-0) cut the deficit to one, 2-1, as Brooke Piper's shot was deflected off a SJU player and into the net at 84:26, but the Hawks would not allow the Retrievers to get off another shot to earn the win.
Sophomore Lauren Jancuska made six saves in net for hr first win of the season for Saint Joseph's.
The Hawks return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. against Fairleigh Dickinson. Saint Joseph's will be collecting items for the Philadelphia Treats for Troops program at Finnesey Field that day.
