Prim's Career-High Leads Women's Basketball Past Hofstra, 71-55

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Backed by a career-high 19 points from senior guard Ashley Prim, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team downed Hofstra, 71-55, Sunday afternoon at the Mack Sports Complex. The Hawks took a 17-point lead into halftime and never relented in the second half as they held the Pride to just 35.7 percent shooting (20-of-56) and caused 28 turnovers.

In the first half, the Hawks (3-2) fell down 10-9 early, but answered back with a 12-5 run as Prim nailed back-to-back three-pointers to give SJU a 22-14 lead with 9:11 to go in the half.

Hofstra (1-3) cut the deficit to 22-18, but Saint Joseph's took control of both ends from there, using a 20-7 run to end the half and take a 42-25 edge into the second stanza. Saint Joseph's caused 10 turnovers over the final 14 minutes of the half and held the Pride to just 37 percent shooting in the first half (10-27) and just 3-of-10 to finish the half.

The Pride quickly cut the deficit to 11 in the second half as Hofstra used a 6-0 run over the opening two minutes. Saint Joseph's responded though, posting a 15-0 run that opened a 57-31 lead on a Prim jumper at 14:19. The Hawks would keep the Pride at a distance from there as SJU improved to 2-0 on the road this year.

For the game, the Hawks shot 42.9 percent from the floor (24-of-56), 45 percent from three-point range (9-of-20) and hit 14-of-16 from the foul line. Despite being outrebounded 46-30, SJU scored 27 points off Hofstra turnovers.

Individually, Prim hit 7-of-10 from the floor, including a career-best 5-of-7 from three-point range to go with four assists, four steals and two rebounds. Junior guard Erin Shields and junior forward Ilze Gotfrida each added 11 points, while redshirt senior forward Chatilla van Grinsven had a team-high seven rebounds to go with nine points.

Shante Evans paced Hofstra with 19 points and 15 rebounds

The Hawks return to action Saturday, December 1, at Saint Francis (Pa.). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
