PHILADELPHIA - Led by redshirt senior forward Chatilla van Grinsven's third double-double of the season, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team defeated Lafayette, 69-43, on Wednesday evening at Hagan Arena. van Grinsven recorded a season-high 19 points, 15 coming in the second half, to go along with 11 rebounds in the win.
Entering the second half with a 30-22 lead, the Hawks went on a 21-2 run that was capped with a layup by junior forward Ashley Robinson to extend Saint Joseph's lead to 51-24 at 11:47. With 1:32 remaining in the game, junior guard Kasie Parker drained a three for the game's final points to give the Hawks their second biggest lead of the game at 69-43.
At the start of the first half, Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 4-0 run on a layup by redshirt sophomore Natasha Cloud and a pair of converted free throws by senior guard Ashley Prim. With a 19-14 lead at the 7:26 mark, the Hawks would extend their lead to as many as 10 and not trail by more than seven as they headed into halftime with the 30-22 advantage.
For the game, Saint Joseph's held the advantage over Lafayette by shooting 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the floor and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) in free throws. The Hawks dominated the second half, recording 39 points on 47.2 percent shooting from the floor while limiting the Leopards to 7-of-23 attempts (30.4 percent). On the defensive end, SJU caused 28 turnovers while boasting a season-high 17 steals.
Individually, junior guard Erin Shields added 10 points for Saint Joseph's. Prim filled up the box score with nine points, six rebounds, and four assists while Cloud posted four points and a team-best five assists. In her first game of the season, Robinson posted eight points and grabbed three boards.
The Leopards saw Danielle Fiacco post a double-double with a team-best 11 points and 13 rebounds.
The Hawks return to action this Saturday, December 8 as they host cross-city rival Villanova at Hagan Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
