PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell at Drexel, 18-10, to open the season on Wednesday. Senior Grace Dinn led the Hawks with five goals and one assist.
The Dragons outshot Saint Joseph's, 18-5, in the first half and scored 13 goals to take a 13-4 lead into the break. Dinn netted a hat trick in the first half as senior Carly Kindbom added a fourth goal for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's came out in the second with three straight goals. Sophomore Abby Ananian scored off a free position shot at the 29:15 mark in the second. Following up a strong opening half, Dinn added two more goals to bring the lead down to a manageable 13-7.
Drexel then quickly erased the Hawks run with a four-goal run of their own to make it 17-7. Sparked by Dinn, SJU started another three-goal streak at the 13:16 mark with a free position shot. Goals by sophomore Michele Granger and senior Megan McDevitt made the score 17-10 before a late goal finalized the 18-10 victory for the Dragons.
Drexel outshot the Saint Joseph's on the afternoon, 24-17, and turn the ball over just 14 times to SJU's 20.
Hawks' goalkeeper Alisha Aquilino tallied three saves on the afternoon.
Saint Joseph's returns to action in the home opener at Finnesey field on Saturday against Wagner. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
