Feb. 4, 2012

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. - Saint Joseph's senior Michelle Baker became the 21st Hawk to reach 1,000 career points, but it wasn't enough as the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team fell at Richmond, 78-59, Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center.

Entering the game 14 points shy of the 1,000 point plateau, Baker scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the opening stanza. After an early layup Baker reached the career milestone on a jumpshot with 11:06 left in the second half.

Despite the career highlight, the Hawks couldn't recover from an early run by the Spiders. With the game tied at 15, Richmond went on a 12-0 run to open a 27-15 edge with 5:30 to go in the first half.

The Hawks would rally cut the deficit to six, 31-25, but Richmond scored the final basket of the first half and first six points of the second half to open a 39-25 gap.

While putting up a strong fight, Saint Joseph's would come no closer than 12 points from there.

As a team, SJU shot 38.7 percent from the floor (24-of-62), hit 4-of-12 from three-point range and 7-of-8 from the foul line. Redshirt sophomore Ashley Robinson finished with 12 points and five rebounds, while senior Katie Kuester was the third Hawk in double figures, finishing with 11 points.

At the other end, Richmond shot 53.4 percent from the field (31-of-58) and knocked down 4-of-6 from behind the arc and 12-of-17 from the foul line. Abby Oliver led four Spiders in double figures with 19 points.

The Hawks return to action this Wednesday at La Salle. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
