March 10, 2012

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Saint Joseph's softball team continued play at the Amy S. Harrison Classic with games against host UC Riverside, Loyola Marymount and Quinnipiac. The Hawks fell to UC Riverside 4-0, Loyola Marymount in nine innings, 7-4 and to the Bobcats, 1-0.

Against the host Highlanders, the Hawks amassed five hits, but couldn't score. Freshman Nicole Palase went 2-for-4, while senior Alaina Loguidice and juniors Shannon Kramer and Rochelle Christman added a hit apiece.

UC Riverside scored three runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run triple and a wild pitch off SJU senior Erin Gallagher. The Highlanders added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

On the mound, Gallagher was the hard-luck loser, allowing four runs over 5.2 innings while striking out two. Classmate Lauren Pembleton gave up a hit and struck out one in 0.1 innings of work.

A four-run top of the ninth proved to be too much for the Hawks to rally back from as they fell to Loyola Marymount, 7-4.

With the scored tied at 3-3 entering the ninth, a RBI single and a three-run home run by Loyola Marymount opened a 7-3 edge for the Lions.

Loguidice got a run back for SJU in the bottom of the inning on a fielder's choice that scored Melissa Ruf, but the Hawks left two runners on base to end the game.

Loyola Marymount took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Hawks got a run back in the bottom of the inning as RBI double by Bernadette Moran scored Palase.

The Lions opened a 3-1 edge with a run in the fifth, but the Hawks rallied to force extra innings with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Christman and sophomore Maria Ficca picked up a RBI each during the offensive outburst.

On the mound, Gallagher worked every innings, striking out four along the way.

Against Quinnipiac, five separate Hawks recorded a hit, but again SJU couldn't get a runner to cross.

Quinnipiac's run in the bottom of the second proved crucial against SJU junior starter Taryn Ashway. Ashway scattered four hits while striking out four, but was the hard-luck loser.

At the plate, Moran, Palase, Loguidice, Ficca and junior Deanna Stinner each had a hit for SJU.
