Softball Splits Doubleheader at Penn

March 14, 2012

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's softball team split its doubleheader at city-rival Penn on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks fell 1-0 in the opener, but bounced back for a 3-1 victory in game two.

In the nightcap, Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single by freshman Lauren Rendon that scored junior Dana Parks from second base.

The Hawks (6-13) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth as freshman Lauren Rendon singled to score pinch runner Taylor McGorry.

Penn scored a run in the bottom of the fourth off SJU starter Taryn Ashway, but the Hawks' pitcher held the Quakers off the board from there to finish with five strikeouts and improve to 3-6.

Rendon added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, scoring on a RBI single by sophomore Maria Ficca.

In a pitching duel to open play, neither team was able to score a run over the opening six inning. After stranding a Hawk runner in the top of the inning, the Quakers scored the game-winning run on a basses loaded walk with no outs to end the game.

Senior Erin Gallagher was the hard-luck loser, allowing the one run and five hits, while striking out two.

The Hawks return to action this Saturday with a doubleheader at Delaware State. Game one begins at noon.
