Final Stats
PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team fell to Penn State, 7-3, Saturday afternoon on Finnesey Field. Griffin Ferrigan posted 11 saves between the pipes for SJU.
Johnny Simanski broke up a 2-0 run by the Nittany Lions when he scored SJU's first goal to cut the deficit in half at 9:41. Penn State went on to add two more goals in the second quarter to take a 4-1 lead into the break.
About three minutes apart, PSU added two more goals by Nick Dolik and Matthew Mackrides in the beginning of the third to take 6-1 advantage. The Hawks would not go down without a fight as Kyle Mahoney found Kyle Williams for the second goal with 3:38 remaining in the quarter. In the final frame, Ryan McGee added his only goal as he dove from behind the net to find the lower left corner of the goal at 7:43.
Penn State played solid defense for the rest of the game and added one more goal to finalize the score at 7-3 and improve their record to 4-4.
PSU outshot the Hawks, 32-28, and held the slight advantage in face-offs, 8-7. Saint Joseph's created 16 turnovers on the day with seven of them in the fourth.
The Hawks will return to action next Saturday, when they travel to Massachusetts to take on the no. 3 Minutemen. The game is set for 1:00 p.m.
