The Saint Joseph's softball dropped a non-conference contest at Monmouth, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks' junior Deanna Stinner and sophomore Morgan Earling and picked up a RBI apiece on the day.
Monmouth opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on a solo home run against SJU starter Lauren Pembleton, but SJU responded in the fourth to tie the score at 1-1. Sophomore Maria Ficca scored on a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Earling.
A passed ball led to Monmouth's second run in the fifth, but again Saint Joseph's answered, this time tying it at 2-2 in the top of the sixth.
Stinner's pinch-hit single to right field with one out allowed pinch runner Trenaya White to score from second and tie the game.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, Monmouth regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth against SJU's Erin Gallagher. A one-out RBI double proved to be the decisive blow as it scored Monmouth's third run.
Gallagher fell to 5-8 on the season after allowing two runs, only one earned, while striking out three over four innings. Pembleton allowed one run over two innings of work, while junior Rochelle Christman went 2-for-2 at the plate.
The Hawks return to action this Sunday when they host La Salle in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at noon.
