PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team entered half time tied, 2-2, but fell to Drexel, 8-4, after a 6-2 run in the second half in Tuesday afternoon's conference opener at Finnesey Field. Goalkeeper Griffin Ferrigan made 14 saves between the pipes for the Hawks.
After a scoreless fist quarter, Drexel scored an early goal to take the lead. The Hawks came back with two of their own when sophomore Ryan McGee scored a wrap-around goal (12:36) and Johnny Simanski was set up by Patrick Townsend at 11:34. Drexel would go on to add their second goal by Brendan Glynn to tie the game at half.
The Hawks came out firing as junior Kyle Williams scored his only goal at 13:41 before the Dragons ripped off six straight to add some insurance against SJU. McGee would add his second goal on the afternoon at 6:59 but could not spark a come back as the score ended 8-4.
"The defense played extremely well today," said head coach Taylor Wray. "Drexel is a great team, they dominated us on face-offs and controlled the ball. Our defense was able to keep us in the game early but we couldn't hang on."
Drexel fired 49 shots to SJU's 16 and dominated the face-offs, 11-4.
"Griffin Ferrigan played terrific in net again. I was impressed by Griffin and the defense to hold Drexel to just eight goals. Drexel lost to number one Virginia and number seven Notre Dame by a single goal," said Wray. "I'm proud of the effort we had today and I'm excited about the improvements we continue to make."
The Hawks will return to action on Saturday when Brown comes to Finnesey Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
