Final Stats
PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team fell to Penn on Tuesday night, 9-5, on Finnesey Field. Sophomore Ryan McGee led the charge, scoring three goals for the Hawks.
The game began as a defensive battle with no goals in the first 11 minutes. After Penn scored its first of the evening, Johnny Simanski answered back for the Hawks, tying the game at 1-1. Penn gained control of the contest by putting together a five-goal streak in the second quarter that lasted into the first minute of the third.
After two Penn goals in the opening minute of the second half, McGee scored his first of the night as he wrapped around from behind the net making the score 6-2. Penn took advantage of a Jack Moran penalty, scoring 44 seconds into the fourth and stretching the lead to five.
SJU came firing back as Michael Dougherty found McGee to set up his second with 9:56 remaining. With momentum, Simanski gathered a ground ball and raced down the center of the field to set up Augustus Quinzani for the Hawks fourth goal. McGee added his third just 82 seconds later to close the gap to 7-5. Penn went on to add two more goals in the last three minutes of regulation to make the final 9-5.
Ryan Parietti led the Quakers with three goals as John Conneely assisted three and scored one of his own.
Griffin Ferrigan took the loss between the pipes making a season-high 17 saves, while Brian Feeney picked up the win for Penn stopping 10 shots.
The Quakers controlled the face-offs, 11-6, and outshot the Hawks, 40-26. Both squads turned the ball over 13 times with SJU turning it over six times in the fourth.
The Hawks will return to action when they make their longest trip of the season to Macon, Ga., to take on Mercer. The first face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
