Softball Drops Series To Temple

MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Temple on Wednesday. The Hawks fell 3-1 in the opener and 7-3 in game two.

In game one, Temple scored the first run of the game in the top of the second, taking advantage of a SJU fielding error with two outs. With a runner on second, the Owls' Christina Sykora reached safely as the Hawks' first baseman was unable to handle the throw, allowing Julia Kastner to score.

The Owls added to its lead in the top as Julia Kastner drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to score Sarah Prezioso from third. Lacey McKeoon followed with a bouncer off the plate, allowing her to reach first safely, with teammate Stephanie Pasquale scoring on the play.

Saint Joseph's got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore Morgan Earling scored from second on a RBI single by classmate Maria Ficca down the left field line.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, they were unable to score from there despite having two runners on base in the fifth and sixth.

Senior Erin Gallagher fell to 8-13 with the loss, allowing only two earned runs, while striking out four over seven innings.

In the nightcap, the Owls took a 1-0 lead int he second on a solo home run, but the Hawks answered back with three runs in the next inning.

Senior Bernadette Moran's double scored junior Dana Parks, while Moran would score the go-ahead run on a bunt single by junior Deanna Stinner two batters later. A throwing error by the Temple catcher would allow SJU freshman Lauren Rendon to score the third run of the inning and give the Hawks a 3-1 edge.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Owls would rally. After making it a 3-2 game in the sixth, Temple added five runs in the top of the seventh on five hits and a SJU fielding error to make it a 7-3 game.

Saint Joseph's would get a pair of hits in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to score.

At the plate, Parks went 3-for-4 in game two with a run scored. Junior Taryn Ashway fell to 9-13 with the loss despite striking out nine and allowing just two earned runs.

The Hawks, who fell to 17-26-1 overall and 6-9-1 in the Atlantic 10, return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader against Saint Louis. Saint Joseph's will honor it five seniors in a pregame ceremony.
