Senior Erin Gallagher became Saint Joseph's all-time leader in career victories as she earned the 2-0 victory over Saint Louis in the first game of an Atlantic 10 softball doubleheader at the SJU Softball Field. Saint Louis came back to win the second game, 5-3.
Saint Joseph's is now 18-27-1 (7-10-1 A-10) on the season while Saint Louis owns a 21-31 (8-10 A-10) mark.
Gallagher struck out seven and allowed just three hits in five innings to record her 63rd career victory. She surpassed Christina Kowalski, who had won 62 games from 1997 to 2000.
In the first game, the Hawks wasted no time as they put a run on the board in the bottom of the first. Junior Dana Parks drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Melissa Ruf. Senior Bernadette Moran then doubled down the right field line to drive in Parks, putting Saint Joseph's ahead, 1-0.
Nicole Palase led off the home half of the fifth with a single to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Parks. Moran then struck again as she drove in Palase on a single to centerfield to extend Saint Joseph's lead to 2-0.
Hawk junior Taryn Ashway entered the game in the sixth and allowed just two SLU hits to earn the save.
In the second game, Saint Louis took an early 2-0 lead, with a run in the first and one in the third.
SJU tied it in the bottom of the fifth as Maria Ficca delivered a double with the bases loaded to drive in three runs, scoring Deanna Stinner, pinch runner Traneya White, and Parks.
The Billikens tied it 3-3 with a leadoff home run by Alyson Brand in the top of the sixth and then went ahead, 4-3, when Kelsey Biggs hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh. SLU added an insurance run on a single by Lauren Bohning, which scored Kerri Dockins.
Before the first game, Saint Joseph's honored seniors Christine Bednar, Lauren Pembleton, Erin Gallagher, Bernadette Moran, and Alaina Loguidice on "Senior Day".
SJU closes out the regular season on May 4 and 5 when it hosts St. Bonaventure.
