Box Score

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Saint Joseph's softball team capped an undefeated weekend Saturday with a win and a tie at East Carolina's Pirate Clash. The Hawks opened the day with 3-1 win over Georgetown and finished with an 8-8 draw against St. John's as the game was called in the sixth due to inclement weather before the Hawks had a chance to bat in the bottom of the inning. With Sunday's game against East Carolina already cancelled due to rain, Saint Joseph's finished its season-opening weekend with a 3-0-1 record, and the only team to go undefeated in the tournament.

In the opener, the Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-run home run by senior Rochelle Christman. Classmate Monica Aguilar, who led off with a double, came around to score on Christman's first homer of the season.

The Hawks opened a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth as freshman Sarah Yoos scored from third on a Christman groundout.

In the circle, senior Taryn Ashway was stellar, allowing one run in the bottom of the sixth, but holding the Hoyas there and finishing with the complete-game win. Ashway struck out six, while allowing just three hits in the first game of the day.

Against St. John's, the Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Dana Parks scored the first run on a double by Yoos. Following a strikeout, freshman Brandi Harkness came through for SJU with a RBI single that scored Yoos.

The Red Storm answered with five runs in the top of the second, but the Hawks cut into the deficit with a run in the bottom of the third as Parks scored on a RBI double by Aguilar.

Three more runs by St. John's in the top of the fifth opened an 8-3 lead. Despite trailing by five, the Hawks would stage a comeback in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 8-8.

Sophomore Melissa Ruf made it an 8-4 game on a RBI single by Harkness, and set up a dramatic two-out at-bat by senior Deanna Stinner. With the bases loaded, the Hawks' starting designated homered to left field to tie the game 8-8.

Despite strong rain, St. John's batted in the top of the sixth, but were held off the scoreboard.

The umpires would call the game on weather before SJU would get a final at-bat, resulting in the tie.

The Hawks return to action next weekend at the Coastal Carolina Kickin' Chicken Classic beginning Friday.
