Box Score
DELAND, Fla. -
Greg Kumpel and Mike Muha had three RBI apiece but it wasn't enough as the Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to Stetson, 7-6, in a cold and windy series finale on Sunday afternoon at Melching Field.
Saint Joseph's (2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Chris Hueth led off with a walk and came in to score three batters later on a fielder's choice groundout by Muha.
Stetson (1-2) equalized in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out single by Mike Fernland and went ahead in the third, plating three runs to go on top, 4-1.
The Hawks roared back in the fourth as Kumpel ripped a bases-loaded triple to score Quinn Renner, Anthony Cirillo, and Muha and tie the game at 4-4.
In the fifth, Cirillo reached on a two-out error before Muha hit an inside-the-park home run to give the Hawks a 6-4 lead.
However, the Hatters answered in the bottom of the frame as a two-out error brought home a pair of runs to knot the score at six apiece.
Stetson threatened again in the seventh as the first two batters of the inning reached base, but Muha and Matt Haskins retired the next three hitters to escape the jam.
The Hatters eventually broke through in the ninth as Tanner Blackman singled off of Steven Schuler with one out to score Fernland with the winning run.
Schuler took the loss to fall to 0-1 while Kevin Fagan got the win to improve to 1-0.
The Hawks will return to the diamond on Friday, February 22, with the first of a three-game weekend set at VCU. First pitch in the series opener is set for 3:00 p.m.
