Box Score
RICHMOND, Va. -
Senior Kyle Mullen threw seven strong innings and senior Anthony Cirillo had a pair of hits, but the Saint Joseph's baseball team ultimately fell at VCU, 1-0, on a cloudy and cold Friday afternoon at The Diamond.
Mullen went seven innings and scattered six hits, allowing one run while striking out five, but took the loss to fall to 1-1. Cirillo continued his solid start to the season, going 2-for-3 on the day.
VCU (3-0) got on the board in the bottom of the first, scoring the game's only run on a single by Joey Cujas.
Saint Joseph's (2-2) had its best opportunity in the top of the sixth as Cirillo led off with a single, advanced on a wild pitch, and then went to third on a two-out infield single by Quinn Renner, but Rams starter Heath Dwyer induced a fly ball to end the threat.
Dwyer allowed just three hits and one walk while fanning six to improve to 2-0. Matt Lees earned his second save of the season with two scoreless innings of relief.
Senior Shane Carey threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Hawks, allowing one hit and notching a strikeout.
The teams will continue the series on Saturday at The Diamond. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. Despite VCU joining the Atlantic 10 this past summer, the series does not count towards the conference standings.
