PHILADELPHIA - In a tightly contested City 6 matchup in which neither team lead by more than two goals, the women's lacrosse team fell in the final six minutes to Drexel, 8-6, on Friday afternoon at Finnesey Field. With their first loss of the season, the Hawks fall to 2-1 overall in spite of holding the Dragons to under 10 goals for the first time this season.
Trailing 6-4 early into the second half, sophomore midfielder Julia Falcone netted back-to-back goals (16:50, 15:09) to equalize the score at six apiece, but Drexel's Joelle Clark came back with two goals of her own to seal the victory for the Dragons.
Drexel (4-0) struck first, scoring two goals in the first 16 minutes of the opening half before Falcone scored her first two of four goals of the game (13:19, 9:04) to even the playing field at 2-2.
From the final 7:15 of the first half through the first half of the second, the sides alternated in goal scoring as the Dragons tacked on three more goals and Hawks graduate student Meghan McDevitt and junior attack Abby Ananian added one goal apiece to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of the visitors.
Drexel's Kelli Joran recorded her third goal of the game with 18:09 remaining in the second half to give the Dragon's a 6-4 advantage before it came down to the final four goals of the game.
Falcone had a standout performance for the Hawks, registering a game-high four goals on the afternoon. Ananian and McDevitt scored one goal apiece and were good for two and one assist(s), respectively. Junior Brittany Hanrahan was sold on the defensive end for the Hawks as she contributed with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, both team highs.
In her first collegiate start, freshman goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin was strong in goal, making five saves and holding Drexel's offense to eight goals for the first time this season, in a full 60-minute effort.
For the game, Drexel held the advantage in shots, 18-13, and draw controls, 10-6, while Saint Joseph's picked up 14 of 24 total ground balls.
"Defensively, the team played well and as hard as I could've asked them to play for the entire 60 minutes," said Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse head coach Denise Roessler. "Offensively, we connected on our passes, especially with Falcone's hat-trick. They played really well together the entire game. This was a top team, and we played at a top level today."
Saint Joseph's will head south to meet Presbyterian this Sunday, March 3, in Clinton, S.C. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Old Bailey Stadium. The Hawks are 1-0 all-time against the Blue Hose having defeated them 17-3 in their inaugural meeting on March 7, 2012. In that game, Ananian scored three goals for SJU while senior goalkeeper Alisha Aquilino made 10 saves in the win.
