MERION STATION, Pa. -
Senior pitcher Taryn Ashway struck out six over seven scoreless innings as the Saint Joseph's softball team topped Penn, 5-0, in the Hawks' home opener at the SJU Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon.
Taking advantage of a costly error by Penn in the bottom of the first, SJU jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Senior Dana Parks scored the first run of the game on a passed ball, while freshman Sarah Yoos' triple scored Monica Aguilar to make it 2-0. Rookie Brandi Harkness would plate Yoos with a RBI single a batter later.
Parks gave her team a 4-0 lead in the second on a RBI single that scored Maria Ficca.
Adding an insurance run in the sixth, pinch runner Kerrie Kortmann scored from third as Morgan Earling got stuck in a rundown on purpose between first and second.
The five runs were more than enough for Ashway as she allowed just two hits, while striking out six.
The Hawks (11-3-1) return to action with a doubleheader at Drexel on Friday.
