Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Delaware

MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's softball teamswept its doubleheader against Delaware Wednesday afternoon at the SJU Softball Field. The Hawks took game one 4-3 and won the nightcap 7-1 as freshman pitcher Liz Mendez matched the Hawks single-season record for saves with her fourth in the opener.

The Hawks (17-3-1) ttook the opening game of their doubleheader against Delawareas senior Rochelle Christman homered, and classmate Taryn Ashway picked up the win.

Saint Joseph's opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer by Christman that scored Sarah Yoos.

The Blue Hens struck for a run in the fifth, but SJU answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead. Dana Parks scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Melissa Ruf, while Nicole Palase scored the fourth Hawk run on a single by Monica Aguilar.

Ashway, who held Delaware to one run over the first five innings, got touched up for two runs in the top of the sixth, but Mendez came in to shut the door on the Blue Hens and worked out of trouble in the seventh to earn the save.

In game two, Ruf scored from third base on a passed ball in the bottom of the first to give SJU the 1-0 lead.

The Blue Hens got to game two starter Mendez for a run in the second, but pinch runner Traneya White scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Maria Ficca to but SJU up 2-1

The Hawks blew the game open with three runs in the third as Harkness opened the scoring with a RBI double that scored Kerrie Kortmann. Harkness and classmate Sarah Yoos would make it a 5-1 game as their speed took advantage of a RBI single by Ficca and fielding error by Delaware.

Sophomore Nicole Palase singled home Ruf in the top of the fourth, while Palase scored on a sacrifice fly by Aguilar in the next at bat to to make it 7-1.

Ashway, who came in in the third picked up the win as the game was called in the sixth due to lack of light. Ashway struck out three while allowing one hit, while Mendez worked the first two innings.

The Hawks return to action Saturday when they host Charlotte at noon.
