PHILADELPHIA - Despite registering three of the game's final five goals, the men's lacrosse team fell to cross-city rival #14/14 Drexel, 16-3, in CAA action on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Drexel (7-2, 2-0 CAA) scored the first 14 goals of the game to give the Dragons a commanding 14-0 lead early into the fourth period.
Saint Joseph's got on the board as sophomore midfielder Michael Dougherty recorded his ninth goal of the season just three minutes into the final quarter and freshman attack Pat Swanick netted a goal of his own with 8:21 remaining in regulation to close the deficit, 14-2.
The Dragons would tack on two more goals (3:43, 2:47) before Swanick took advantage of an extra-man opportunity to tally the final goal of the game with just :09 left.
Swanick led the Hawks on the offensive end with his two-goal effort. Defensively, junior midfielder Will Abbott picked up a team-high three ground balls and went 6-of-15 (.400) from the face-off. Sophomore defender Will Farrell picked up two ground balls and caused a game-high four turnovers for the Hawks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Dustin Keen (4-6) took the loss in the net, making five saves and allowing 12 goals in 43:47 minutes of action. Senior goalkeeper Chris Moffa replaced Keen in goal for the final 16:13 and made five saves while allowing four goals.
Drexel outshot Saint Joseph's 45-30 and held a 26-21 advantage in ground balls while keeping Saint Joseph's to just eight possessions of 21 attempts from the face-off.
Saint Joseph's will look for its first CAA win this Saturday, March 30 as the Hawks host Massachusetts in CAA action slated for 1:00 p.m. on Finnesey Field.
