Softball Takes Slugfest From Rider, 11-7

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Sarah Yoos went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Saint Joseph's softball team to an 11-7 victory at Rider on Thursday afternoon. The starting second baseman was one of two Hawks to hit home runs, while senior pitcher Taryn Ashway improved to 19-1 on the season with the victory.

Saint Joseph's (23-4-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Dana Parks opened the scoring on a RBI single by Yoos. A fielding error by the Broncs' third baseman allowed two more runs to score as a Yoos and Nicole Palase score on a shot by Deanna Stinner.

Rider would score a run in the bottom of the inning, but a two-run top of the third opened a 5-1 edge for the Hawks. With pinch runner Kerrie Kortmann at second after replacing Monica Aguilar following her double, Yoos drilled a two run home run to give her team a four run lead.

Following a two run bottom of the third y Rider, the Hawks blew open the game with a six-run top of the fourth. Palase opened the offensive output with a two run home run that scored Parks to make it 7-3. Two batters later, Yoos would single home Aguilar to give SJU an 8-3 edge.

Rochelle Christman would followed three batter later with a two-run double that scored Yoos and Brandi Harkness. Stinner would score the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Maria Ficca.

Rider would fight back with two runs in the fifth and sixth, but Ashway would come in for the final six outs to preserve the win.

Parks finished 2-for-4 with twi runs scored, while Aguilar was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Ashway, who started the game but left in the third only to return in the sixth, struck out six in 4.1 innings.

The Hawks return to action Sunday when they host Dayton. Game one of the doubleheader begins at noon.
