PHILADELPHIA - A 3-0 run late into the second half brought the Hawks to within six goals, but the women's lacrosse team fell to #13 Massachusetts, 14-7, in Atlantic 10 action on Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field. With the loss, SJU stands at 8-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Massachusetts (13-2, 5-0 A-10) jumped out to a 5-0 run that spanned the first 16 minutes before a UMass penalty set up Saint Joseph's junior midfielder Michele Granger for a free position shot. Granger hit the back of the net to put the Hawks on the board, 5-1, with 11:49 remaining in the first half.

The Minutewomen scored back-to-back goals (8:38, 3:14) to expand their lead, 7-1.

A pair of Hawk freshmen would convert on SJU's next offensive tally as freshman attack Emily Bowers found freshman attack Bianca Angstadt for Saint Joseph's second goal of the game.

UMass scored four consecutive times from the end of the first half through the first 11 minutes of the second to extend its advantage, 11-2.

Graduate student Meghan McDevitt took advantage of a Massachusetts penalty at the 18:56 mark as she found sophomore midfielder Julia Falcone, who registered her 27th goal of the season (17:13).

Just over three minutes later, McDevitt dished out what would become her second assist of the game to junior attack Abby Ananian to pull the Hawks to within seven goals, 11-4, with 13:46 remaining in regulation.

The Minutewomen added another pair just two minutes from one another before the Hawks went on a 3-0 run, sparked by free position shots from Ananian and sophomore attack Hallie Pickard and McDevitt's rocket low into the goal.

However, with a 13-7 deficit with just over two minutes remaining, the Hawks would see UMass score once more with 22 seconds left to take the 14-7 victory.

McDevitt (1g, 2a) and Ananian (2g) led the Hawks on the offensive end while freshman goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (7-6, 2-3 A-10) made 13 saves in a full 60:00 while picking up a team-high three ground balls.

Massachusetts' Sam Rush (5g, 1a) and Lauren Tarracciano (3g, 1a) led the Minutewomen attack while Jamie Schiloski, Rachel Vallarelli, and Meaghan Kollmeier combined for six saves.

For the game, UMass held advantages in shots (32-17), ground balls (18-15) and draw controls (13-9). Saint Joseph's committed 21 turnovers compared to Massachusetts' 11, with six coming off of failed clears.

The Saint Joseph's University Athletic Department celebrated 20 years of lacrosse today by honoring the school's first women's varsity team. The members of the 1993 Hawk squad - head coach Denise Leggitt, assistant coach Dayle Laughlin, Monica Adduci, Laurie Campbell-Garrison, Kelly McCann-Kratz, Maureen Colvin-McHugh, Keri Davisson-Sinnes, Christine Glinski-Miller, Jessica Huffman-Blake, Jeanine-Kassl Nolan, and Amy Schemn - were recognized at halftime of the game, in conjunction with Alumni and Family Day festivities. A reception for alumni and their families followed the games at Landmark Americana Tap & Grill located on 54th Street.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Friday, April 19 at Richmond. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
