MERION STATION, Pa. - Behind a two-run single by Nicole Palase and a strong pitching performance from Taryn Ashway, the Saint Joseph's softball team downed Dayton, 2-0, in the first game of their doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the SJU Softball field. The Hawks would follow with a 3-1 in the nightcap for the sweep.

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a two run single by the sophomore shortstop Palase. With the bases loaded and two outs, Palase lined a single into left center, allowing pinch runner Christina Gonzalez to score from third and Dana Parks to score from third.

In the circle, Ashway scattered six hits, while striking out seven to improve to 20-1 on the year.

In game two, Saint Joseph's (25-4-1, 9-1 Atlantic 10) took the lead early as Maria Ficca singled past the shortstop to score pinch runner Traneya White and Sarah Yoos with two outs in the bottom of the second.

Saint Joseph's generated a run in the third as Parks singled to lead off the inning. Stealing second on the next at-bat, Parks would make it to third on an errant throw by the catcher. Melissa Ruf followed with a RBI single to right field that plated Parks easily to make it 3-0.

Dayton would make it a 3-1 game with a run in the fourth, but Ashway would keep the Flyers off the board to earn the win and move to 21-1.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Tuesday when they host Delaware State at 3:30 p.m.
