NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Freshman attack Emily Bowers has been named an Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Co-Rookie of the Week, the league office announced today. Bowers has been selected for games played during the week of April 8-14.
In just her third collegiate game and second start of the season, Bowers scored three goals off of three shots to register her first career hat trick as she helped lead the Hawks to a 13-10 Atlantic 10 victory over La Salle on Friday, April 12. The freshman also picked up three ground balls. The win gave the Hawks their second Atlantic 10 win in one season for the first time since 2009.
In addition to her three-goal effort, the rookie dished out an assist against #13 Massachusetts this past Sunday.
On the season, Bowers has made three starts in four games played. The freshman has eight points to her name off of five goals and three assists and sports an impressive .800 (8-of-10).
"As a freshman Emily is really composed," said head coach Denise Roessler after SJU's win over La Salle on Friday. "She reads defenses very well and takes advantage of it when she can. She's not afraid. I'm proud of her."
Bowers and the Hawks return to action this weekend as they travel to Richmond to face the Spiders in conference action on Friday, April 19. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Robbins Stadium.
