The Saint Joseph's softball team lost a heart-breaking game to Massachusetts Friday afternoon at the SJU Softball Field. Leading 1-0 heading into the top of the seventh, the Hawks allowed two runs to the visiting Minutewomen to fall to their Atlantic 10 rivals.
The Hawks (28-7-1, 11-4 A-10) would score the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth courtsey of senior Deanna Stinner. With the bases loaded and one out, the SJU first baseman hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed pinch runner Hannah Dionne score from third and give her team a 1-0 lead.
Massachusetts (15-19, 9-4 A-10) would rally to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh. Tiffany Meeks reached on a SJU error to start the inning, while Lindsey Webster followed with a home run to centerfield to give the Minutewomen a one-run advantage.
For the Hawks' Taryn Ashway was the hard-luck loser, falling to 23-3 overall after going all seven innings, while allowing just one earned run and struck out one.
The Hawks and Minutewomen cap their two-game series tomorrow at noon.
