TOWSON, Md. - The men's lacrosse team would not be able to overcome a 5-0 first-quarter run by Towson as the Hawks fell to the Tigers, 13-6, in the regular-season finale.
Down 5-0, Saint Joseph's earned possession off of a Towson face-off violation to start the second quarter, and freshman midfielder Joe McErlean scored the first goal of his collegiate career just 12 seconds in to put the Hawks on the board, 5-1.
Towson (8-7, 4-2 CAA) would score twice in the second, sandwiched between a goal by Hawks junior midfielder Johnny Simanski, assisted by sophomore midfielder Michael Dougherty.
The Tigers would take a 7-2 lead into halftime and add another tally at the 6:44 mark of the third quarter.
Senior attack Kyle Williams scored with just under five minutes remaining in the third to bring the Hawks to within five, but the Tigers recorded two goals in the final 2:30 to extend Towson's lead, 10-3, heading into the final quarter.
Williams would score two more goals and junior midfielder Will Abbott would score his first goal of the season in the fourth. However, Towson would also tack on three more goals in the final quarter to hold on for the 13-6 win.
Williams led the Hawks in scoring with three goals off of seven shots. McErlean led picked up four ground balls and added a caused turnover while Abbott went 11-of-23 fro the face-off.
Sophomore goalkeeper Dustin Keen (5-11, 1-5 CAA) made nine saves while allowing 12 goals in 54:39. Senior goalkeeper Chris Moffa played the final 5:21 between the pipes.
The Tigers were led by Greg Cuccinello's four-goal performance.
For the game, Towson held advantages in shots (43-37) and ground balls (20-14). The Hawks were hurt by 7-of-16 in clears and 0-4 in extra-man opportunities.
Tonight marked the final career game of the men's lacrosse seniors - Brian Brinkmann, Steve Dunn, Ted Hospodar, Pat Kurowski, Kyle Mahoney, Moffa, and Williams.
The Hawks conclude the season 5-11 overall and 1-5 in league play.
