The Saint Joseph's softball team splits its Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Temple on Tuesday. The Hawks slugged their way to a 14-5 win in the opener, but had their 15-game win streak snapped in the second game, falling 10-1.
In game one, Saint Joseph's got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Melissa Ruf scored on a bases loaded walk by Sarah Yoos.
From there, the Hawks' offense blew the game wide open with seven runs in the second and two in the third to take a 10-0 lead over the Owls.
Morgan Earling got momentum going in the top of the second with a solo home run to center field to lead off the inning. Dana Parks would score to make it 3-0 on a RBI single by Monica Aguilar, while Yoos followed with a two-run single that scored Ruf and Nicole Palase to give SJU a 5-0 lead.
Rookie Brandi Harkness would deliver the biggest blow of the inning, drilling a three-run home run to center field with two outs to give SJU an eight run advantage.
Aguilar, who went 3-for-3 in the game, drove in two runs in the third to up the Hawks lead to 10-0.
The Owls battled back with four runs in the bottom of the third, but the Hawks would counter in the top of the fifth, putting them in position to end the game early.
Aguilar singled in Palase to start the fifth, while Yoos slugged a two-run home run to right center in the next at bat to make it a 13-4 lead for Saint Joseph's. Kerrie Kortmann would successfully score from third on a double steal as Earling stole second on the play to make it a 14-4 game.
The Owls would score with two runs in the fifth, but SJU ace Taryn Ashway got a strike out to end the game and improve to 18-1 on the season.
Aguilar added four RBIs in the opener, while Yoos went 2-for-2 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Parks and Palase each added a pair of hits, while Ashway struck out eight to up her team lead to 115.
In game two, the Owls took a one lead with a run in the second, but the Hawks fought back to tie it in the third on a RBI single by Palase that scored Maria Ficca.
Unfortunately for the SJU, Temple's offense clicked from there, scoring four runs in the third and five in the fifth for the 10-1 win.
The Hawks return to action this Sunday when they host Dayton. Game one of a doubleheader begins at noon.
