BRONX, N.Y. - The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped a close contest at Fordham, 5-4, Friday afternoon. The Hawks were led by senior Deanna Stinner's 2-for-3 day that included a RBI and a run scored.

The Hawks (31-8-1, 14-5 Atlantic 10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Stinner doubled home Sarah Yoos for the first run of the game, while Maria Ficca would put the Hawks ahead by two, 2-0, on a RBI double that would score Stinner.

The Rams (31-18, 14-5 A-10) would strike for four runs in the third to take a 4-2 edge. Fordham would tally three of its runs with two runs as it knocked SJU starting pitcher Taryn Ashway out of the game.

Freshman Liz Mendez would come in to get out of the jam, and her teammates would even things up in the top of the fourth. Freshman Brandi Harkness scored the first run of the inning on a RBI single by Rochelle Christman. Christman would come around to score the tying run on a RBI single by Melissa Ruf.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Fordham would get a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth that proved to be the decisive run.

Mendez was the hard-luck loser, falling to 6-5 on the year as she went 3.2 innings and finished with one strike out.

Saint Joseph's and Fordham cap their series Saturday at noon.
